'Wadi Fish' aims to establish a comprehensive research project to investigate the ecology, distribution and conservation status of freshwater fish in Arabia.

The Al Hajar Mountain Range, in which the wadi habitat survey will take place, is one of 200 areas identified by the World Wildlife Fund as the most critical regions for conservation. These 'Global 200' areas are some of the richest, rarest and most endangered areas on the planet.

Surveys carried out across the region will produce biological and physical descriptions of wadi habitats plus information on water quality and faunal composition. In addition, environmental threats facing each habitat will be identified.

The final collation of data will form a basis for local awareness campaigns, educational materials for schools and a knowledge base from which to continue scientific research in the field. The information gathered will also be made available to government and non-governmental organisations for use in decision-making.
